Broadsword

For a production of Macbeth Ohio University. This sword was designed by costume Designer Sara Keller.

The cross guard started by using a 1/4” grinder to shape the quillons with notches that butted the tang. Using two rectangular 3/8” flat stock, I clamped the quillons to one block so the inside was snug to the tang. I welded those on and added the top block. From there I shaped the cross guard and added the . The pommel is shaped stock pipe using a grinder. Each petal was shaped with the grinder and using an Oxy-acetylene torch I heated and shaped the curve of the petals over an anvil. The handle is rock maple that fits the shape of the tang nearly exactly since the inside was routed to shape before gluing the halves together. I created the knot work using a Dremel, files, and chisel. The paint treatment is a base acrylic layer with FEV for the gloss.

Buckler

This project began as 1/8” flat steel that is hammered into the rounded shaped. The rim is welded on 1/8” round stock, and the dragon pieces are my own design cut with a metal bandsaw and filed. The pieces are riveted on and treated with FEV.

Dagger

The blade for the dagger was shaped using a metal grinder. The quillions are shaped flat steel that are heated and bent into shape and welded to a head block. The Pommel is round stock shaped with a grinder and metal file. The handle is lathed and hollowed pine that is leather and wire wrapped. All pieces slot onto the tang with the pommel screwing into place.
